4 things you need to know about activated charcoal

The recent buzz around activated charcoal in media and social media might make it seem like a miracle addition to our food supply. People claim it removes toxins, lowers cholesterol, reduces gas and bloating, and even prevents hangovers.

So lets take a look at our top 4 things you need to know about the ‘magic’ of Activated Charcoal (Check out the video here!)

#1. What is activated charcoal?

Manufacturers create activated charcoal by heating wood or coconut shells to high temperatures and oxidising them. The process leaves fine carbon particles with tiny chambers, resulting in a large surface area that absorbs various chemicals. This property makes it a common filtering agent in water treatment and gas masks.

In the body, activated charcoal stays in the gastrointestinal tract and isn’t absorbed. This feature helps reduce harm in cases of poisoning by limiting toxin absorption. However, never take activated charcoal with oral medications, as it can interfere with their effectiveness.

#2. Let’s ‘clear the air’ on detoxes

We encounter natural and synthetic toxins every day. Even natural toxins can become harmful in large amounts. Fortunately, our bodies have an efficient system to manage and eliminate them. The skin, lymphatic system, gastrointestinal system, kidneys, and especially the liver work together in a sophisticated detoxification process—no juices required!

As for the claims around lowering cholesterol, so far research studies are not supporting this claim.

The most important question: does it prevent hangovers? Apparently not unfortunately and research has failed in supporting this. If it did, I am pretty sure it would be on every supermarket shelf already!

#3. It isn’t all just about good looks and ‘Instagramable’ photos – there is a downer.

The amount of charcoal used in breads, juices and any other foods to make them ‘super’ is quite small and mainly for looks and marketing value. So ingesting these products should be well-tolerated for most and few side effects.

HOWEVER, there is one point you need to know:

Activated charcoal doesn’t distinguish between healthy chemicals in food and unwanted ones in the digestive system. It binds to various water-soluble vitamins, like vitamin C, niacin, B6, thiamine, and biotin. This reduces the nutritional value of the foods and drinks you consume. Oops!

#4. The real use of Activated Charcoal

Since the body doesn’t absorb charcoal, its claims to remove all chemical toxins are simply impossible. So, what is it good for?

You can buy ‘Black Lemonade’ for $9 per 300mL—yes, nine dollars for 300mL. Its most remarkable skill? Draining the bank accounts of those who fall for the word ‘detox.’

In reality, it’s just overpriced filtered water with a bit of charcoal and lemon, usually packaged in a fancy bottle with clever marketing.

Before consuming activated charcoal or any pricey superfood, pause and ask yourself:

Am I having this because a health influencer/’guru’ has recommended it? Or am I having it because I simply enjoy it?
